Definitions: Ratios, Rates, and Complex Fractions

Rate. A ratio that compares two different types of quantities. The resulting unit of measurement is based on the individual quantities.

Unit Rate. A rate expressed as a ratio with 1 in the denominator or sometimes as a decimal.

Equivalent Ratios. Two ratios that are numerically equal to each other.

Ratios with Fractions. Some ratios have terms that are fractions. Such ratios can be rewritten as ratios with integer amounts.

Scale Drawing. A proportional figure that is usually a scaled-down version of a larger figure. A scale factor determines the relationship between the smaller and larger figures.

Scale Factor. When two ratios are proportional, one ratio is a scaled-up or scaled-down version of the other ratio.

Numerator. The part of a fraction that determines the number of fractional parts.

Denominator. The part of a fraction that determines the total fractional parts.
