Fractions Review, Level 2--Vocabulary

Review the following terms and definitions.

Fraction. A number representing part of a whole, usually written as the ratio of a numerator and a non-zero denominator.

Numerator. The part of a fraction that determines the number of fractional parts.

Denominator. The part of a fraction that determines the total fractional parts.

Equivalent Fraction. A fraction with the same numerical value as another fraction but whose numerator and denominator are multiplied by a common factor

Benchmark Fraction. A known fraction used to compare other fractions that are greater than or equal to it.

Factors. The set of integers {1, ..., n} that divide evenly into n.

Comparing Fractions. Determining if one fraction is greater than, less than, or equal to another fraction.

Ordering Fractions. Arranging a set of fractions in order from least to greatest or greatest to least.

Greater Than. When one value is greater than another. The greater than symbol (>) is used to show the relationship between the two values.

Less Than. When one value is less than another. The less than symbol (<) is used to show the relationship between the two values.

Unit Fraction. A fraction whose numerator is 1 and whose denominator is a whole number. Any fraction can be written as the sum of unit fractions.
