Equation. A mathematical statement that says two expressions are equal to each other. Equations can be true or false.

One-Step Equation. An equation that involves one mathematical operation to solve.

Two-Step Equation. An equation that involves two mathematical operations to solve.

Addition Property of Equality. The property that allows the addition of the same quantity to each side of an equation while maintaining the equality.

Subtraction Property of Equality. The property that allows the subtraction of the same quantity from each side of an equation while maintaining the equality.

Multiplication Property of Equality. The property that allows the multiplication of the same quantity to each side of an equation while maintaining the equality.

Division Property of Equality. The property that allows division by the same quantity to each side of an equation while maintaining the equality.

Solution to an Equation. A value for the unknown that turns a conditional equation into a true equation.

Conditional Equation. An equation that is true for certain values of the variable(s).

The Unknown. In a conditional equation the variable is also referred to as the unknown.
