Ratio. The relationship between two numbers, represented as a quotient. The numbers in the ratio must have the same units of measurement or represent similar quantities.

Ratios in Simplest Form. When written as a fraction, a ratio can also be written as a fraction in simplest form.

Equivalent Ratios. Two ratios that are numerically equal to each other.

Part-to-Part Ratio. A ratio based on a comparison of parts of a whole.

Part-to-Whole Ratio. A ratio based on a comparison of a part to the whole. A fractional amount.

Ratios and Fractions. Fractions are part-to-whole ratios.

Ratios with Decimals. Some ratios have terms that are decimals. Such ratios can be rewritten as ratios with integer amounts.

Ratios with Fractions. Some ratios have terms that are fractions. Such ratios can be rewritten as ratios with integer amounts.

Ratios with Percents. Some ratios have terms that are percents. Such ratios can be rewritten as ratios with integer amounts.

Golden Ratio. A special ratio that forms a proportion based on the illustration shown. The symbol for the Golden Ratio is the Greek letter phi.

Visualizing Ratios. An illustration can sometimes help in identifying the terms in a ratio.

Visualizing Equivalent Ratios. An illustration can sometimes help in identifying equivalent ratios.

Rate. A ratio that compares two different types of quantities. The resulting unit of measurement is based on the individual quantities.

Unit Rate. A rate expressed as a ratio with 1 in the denominator or sometimes as a decimal.

Dimensional Analysis. The process of converting from one unit of measure to another using conversion factors equivalent to 1.

Converting Units. Taking a rate expressed in one type of units, multiplying by a conversion factor, to find the rate in another set of units.

Percent. The fractional part out of 100. Percents can be expressed as whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.

Percent of a Number. One of three forms that a percent equation can take. In this form, calculate the percent of a given number for a given percent.

Percent of an Unknown Number. One of three forms that a percent equation can take. Determine an unknown quantity given the percent and the product.

Percent One Number Is of Another. One of three forms that a percent equation can take. In this form, determine the percent one number is of another.

Percent Increase. The increase in a number expressed as a percent change. Use this formula to calculate percent increase.

Percent Decrease. The decrease in a number expressed as a percent change. Use this formula to calculate percent decrease.

Proportion. When two ratios are equal, they form a proportion.

Solving a Proportion. When two ratios are equal to each other, you can set up and solve a proportion.

Similar Figures. Two figures are similar if they have the same shape but different sizes. Corresponding sides are proportional.

Scale Drawing. A proportional figure that is usually a scaled-down version of a larger figure. A scale factor determines the relationship between the smaller and larger figures.
