Definition

A quadratic equation is a polynomial equation of degree two, typically in the form

ax2 + bx + c = 0

where a, b, and c are constants and a ≠ 0.

Description

Quadratic equations are fundamental in algebra and appear in various real-world contexts, such as physics, engineering, and economics. They describe parabolic patterns and are used to model situations where relationships between variables are not linear. For instance, the path of a projectile under gravity follows a quadratic equation. In math education, quadratic equations are essential for teaching students about polynomial functions, graphing techniques, and solution methods such as factoring, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula. Understanding quadratic equations enables students to explore the properties of parabolas, including their vertices, axes of symmetry, and intercepts.

An example of solving a quadratic equation is finding the roots of

x2 − 4x + 3 = 0

which can be factored into(x − 1)(x − 3) = 0, yielding solutions x = 1 and x = 3.
