Lesson Plan: Understanding Equivalent Fractions
This first lesson in the Adding and Subtracting Fractions Unit introduces students to the fundamental concepts of fraction addition and subtraction. By using visual models and real-world examples, students will develop an understanding of what it means to combine and take away fractional parts.
Students will:
- Review basic fraction concepts, including numerators and denominators
- Explore the meaning of fraction addition and subtraction using models
- Identify when fractions can be directly added or subtracted
- Apply real-world examples to reinforce fraction operations
Designed for grades 3-5, this lesson aligns with Common Core standards and lays the groundwork for more advanced fraction operations. By building conceptual understanding first, students gain confidence before moving on to more complex fraction problems.
This is the first lesson in a ten-part unit on adding and subtracting fractions. Each subsequent lesson builds on these foundational skills, gradually introducing students to like and unlike denominators, mixed numbers, and word problems.
