Lesson Plan: Adding Fractions with Like Denominators
In this third lesson of the Adding and Subtracting Fractions Unit, students will learn how to add fractions with like denominators. Since the denominators are the same, students can focus on adding numerators and reinforcing their understanding of fraction addition.
Students will:
- Understand why fractions with the same denominator can be added directly
- Use fraction bars and number lines to visualize fraction addition
- Practice adding fractions and simplifying answers when necessary
- Apply their understanding to solve real-world fraction problems
Designed for grades 3-5, this lesson aligns with Common Core standards and builds on prior knowledge of fraction concepts. Through guided practice and engaging activities, students will develop fluency in adding fractions with like denominators.
This is the third lesson in a ten-part unit on adding and subtracting fractions. Future lessons will introduce adding fractions with unlike denominators, subtraction of fractions, and mixed numbers.
