Lesson Plan: Comparing Fractions

This comprehensive lesson teaches students how to compare fractions using multiple strategies. By leveraging visual models, number lines, and mathematical reasoning, students will develop a strong foundation in fraction comparison. This lesson helps students understand when fractions are greater than, less than, or equal to one another, reinforcing key mathematical concepts.

Students will:

  • Use fraction bars and number lines to compare fractions
  • Apply the concept of common denominators
  • Recognize and compare fractions with like and unlike denominators
  • Develop reasoning skills to justify fraction comparisons

Designed for grades 3-5, this lesson aligns with Common Core standards and builds on prior knowledge of equivalent fractions. Through guided practice and interactive exercises, students will enhance their ability to work with fractions confidently.

This is the fourth lesson in a five-part unit on fraction basics, progressively building students’ understanding of fractions. Educators can use this lesson as a standalone activity or as part of the complete unit.
