Lesson Plan: Solving Fraction Word Problems

In this final lesson of the Fraction Basics Unit, students will apply their understanding of fractions to solve real-world word problems. By interpreting and solving problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions, students will strengthen their problem-solving skills and deepen their conceptual understanding.

Students will:

  • Analyze and solve word problems involving fractions
  • Use visual models and equations to represent fractional relationships
  • Apply fraction operations in real-world contexts
  • Develop reasoning and critical thinking skills

Designed for grades 3-5, this lesson aligns with Common Core standards and builds on students’ previous knowledge of fraction equivalence, comparison, and operations. Engaging activities and step-by-step problem-solving strategies help students confidently tackle fraction-based word problems.

This is the fifth and final lesson in the five-part Fraction Basics Unit. Educators can use it as a standalone lesson or as part of the complete sequence to reinforce key fraction concepts.
