Lesson Plan: Introduction to Quadratic Functions
This first lesson in the Quadratic Functions and Equations Unit introduces students to the fundamental concepts of quadratic functions. By exploring the key characteristics of quadratic equations, students will begin to understand their structure, graphing behavior, and real-world applications.
Students will:
- Define and identify quadratic functions and equations
- Understand the standard form of a quadratic equation (y = ax² + bx + c)
- Recognize the differences between linear and quadratic functions
- Explore the shape of a quadratic function (parabola) and key features such as vertex and axis of symmetry
- Analyze real-world scenarios that can be modeled using quadratic equations
Designed for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 students, this lesson aligns with Common Core standards and sets the stage for deeper exploration of quadratics, including graphing, solving, and applying quadratic functions in various contexts.
This is the first lesson in a ten-part unit on quadratic functions and equations. Future lessons will cover graphing parabolas, solving quadratic equations using multiple methods, and applying quadratics to real-world problem-solving.
