Lesson Plan: Graphing Quadratic Functions
In this second lesson of the Quadratic Functions and Equations Unit, students will learn how to graph quadratic functions. By exploring the properties of parabolas, students will understand how changes in a quadratic equation affect its graph.
Students will:
- Identify key features of a quadratic function, including the vertex, axis of symmetry, and direction of the parabola
- Graph quadratic functions using a table of values
- Determine how changes in coefficients (a, b, and c) affect the shape and position of the parabola
- Analyze quadratic graphs to interpret their real-world meaning
- Practice graphing quadratic functions by hand and using technology
Designed for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 students, this lesson aligns with Common Core standards and builds foundational graphing skills. Understanding how to graph quadratics is essential for solving equations, analyzing functions, and applying quadratics in various contexts.
This is the second lesson in a ten-part unit on quadratic functions and equations. Future lessons will cover different methods for solving quadratic equations, including factoring, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula.
