Lesson Plan: Applications of Quadratic Functions
In this sixth lesson of the Quadratic Functions and Equations Unit, students will explore real-world applications of quadratic functions. Quadratic equations are used in various fields, including physics, engineering, economics, and everyday problem-solving.
Students will:
- Identify real-world scenarios that can be modeled using quadratic functions
- Set up and solve quadratic equations based on word problems
- Analyze projectile motion, area problems, and optimization situations using quadratics
- Interpret key features of a quadratic function (vertex, axis of symmetry, and roots) in a contextual setting
- Use multiple methods—factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula—to solve application problems
Designed for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 students, this lesson aligns with Common Core standards and helps bridge the gap between abstract math and practical problem-solving. Understanding how quadratics are applied in real life strengthens students' reasoning and analytical skills.
This is the sixth lesson in a ten-part unit on quadratic functions and equations. Upcoming lessons will further explore different solution methods and deeper quadratic analysis.
