Lesson Plan: Solving Percent Problems
In this lesson, students will develop their problem-solving skills by learning multiple strategies for solving percent problems. Using proportions and equations, they will calculate percent increase, percent decrease, discounts, taxes, commissions, and simple interest. This lesson builds on proportional reasoning skills and applies them to real-world financial and mathematical situations.
Key concepts covered in this lesson include:
- Using proportions to solve percent problems with missing values.
- Applying the percent equation: Part=Percent×Whole.
- Understanding and calculating percent increase and percent decrease.
- Solving multi-step percent problems involving discounts, tax, and markups.
- Using the simple interest formula I=P×r×t to calculate interest over time.
Students will engage in hands-on problem-solving activities that help them interpret and solve percent-based problems in practical contexts. By the end of the lesson, they will have a stronger understanding of how percents are used in everyday life, from shopping discounts to banking and investments.
