Lesson Plan--Systems of Equations--Lesson 1--Introduction to Systems

Lesson Plan: Introduction to Systems of Equations

In this first lesson of the Systems of Equations Unit, students will be introduced to the concept of systems of equations. A system of equations consists of two or more equations that share common variables, and solving these systems helps in finding values that satisfy all equations simultaneously.

Students will:

  • Understand what a system of equations is and how it differs from a single equation
  • Recognize the different types of solutions a system can have: one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions
  • Explore real-world applications of systems of equations
  • Learn how to represent systems graphically and algebraically
  • Analyze the intersection of lines as a way to determine solutions

Designed for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 students, this lesson aligns with Common Core standards and provides a strong foundation for solving systems using graphing, substitution, and elimination methods.

This is the first lesson in a ten-part unit on systems of equations. Future lessons will introduce specific strategies for solving systems and applying them to real-world contexts.

Subscribers to Media4Math can download these lesson plans in PDF format for easy classroom use.
