Finding the nth Term Of an Arithmetic Sequence: Example 1
Topic
Sequences and Series
Description
General Approach
For an arithmetic sequence, the nth term formula is given by: an = a1 + ( n − 1 ) ⋅ d, where: a1 is the first term of the sequence, d is the common difference between consecutive terms, and n is the term number.
Given Sequence
Sequence: [1, 4, 7, 10, 13]
Formula: an = 1 + 3(n - 1)
17th term: 49
To find the formula:
- First term (a₁) = 1
- Common difference (d) = 3
- Use the formula: an = a1 + (n - 1)d
