Finding the nth Term Of an Arithmetic Sequence: Example 4
Topic
Sequences and Series
Description
General Approach
For an arithmetic sequence, the nth term formula is given by: an = a1 + d•( n − 1 ), where: a1 is the first term of the sequence, d is the common difference between consecutive terms, and n is the term number.
Given Sequence
Sequence: [8, 11, 14, 17, 20]
Formula: an = 8 + 3(n - 1)
35th term: 110
To find the formula:
- First term (a₁) = 8
- Common difference (d) = 11 - 8 = 3
- Use the formula: an = a1 + (n - 1)d
