Instructional Module: Counting Strategies

In this Media4Math Classroom Module, your early elementary students will build on their counting skills by combining Skip Counting and Counting On. Using graphics, videos, and games, students are introduced to more challenging counting scenarios that also pave the way for later developing their addition skills. Specifically, students are shown how to combine Skip Counting and Counting On to quickly and accurately count large numbers of items.

The Archer Fish, Geometry, and Physics

The Archer Fish earns its name because it accurately sprays jets of water at insect prey, knocks them into the water, and has a quick meal. The ability to accurately do this has to overcome several geometric and physical challenges. In this module students explore these challenges in more detail.

Accident Investigation

When a driver slams the brakes on a car, skid marks are created on the road. Accident investigators can measure the length of the skid marks to estimate the speed of the car. This involves using a quadratic function.

Plastics and Place Value

Americans manufacture, use, and recycle plastic products. In this module students look at data regarding the use of plastics in order to learn and apply skills related to place value.

Counting Bison

In this application of arithmetic concepts, students analyze the changing population of bison in the Americas. Using real-world data and applying key math concepts, students will do some sophisticated analysis using basic skills.

Solving Two-Step Equations

In this module students learn how to solve two-step equations. Students are shown how to solve these equations using the Properties of Equality (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division).

Wildlife Refuge

In this module students use their geometry and algebra skills to analyze a wildlife refuge in Nevada. Calculating the area, perimeter, and the ratio of the two allows students to analyze different configurations for a refuge. Specifically, they look at ways of designing a wild horse refuge, using the concepts they have learned.

Apple Harvest

In this module students analyze real-world data relating to apple production and consumption. Looking at global and US data, students look at measures of central tendency by analyzing a box-and-whisker plot and later normal distribution graphs.

Roadside Geometry

In this module, students analyze the geometric properties of road signs. This includes studying triangular, quadrilateral, and other polygon forms in such familiar signs as the stop sign, the yield sign, and many other examples.

Instructional Module: Place Value: Making Tens

In this Media4Math Classroom Module, your early elementary students will use their place value skills to improve their addition by learning to make 10's. Using graphics, videos, and games, students are introduced to rewrite numbers to facilitate adding with 10's. This also becomes an excellent precursor to using the traditional addition algorithm.
